The Vedic Period followed the Indus Valley Civilization and is named after its key texts, the Vedas.
THE PERIOD
• Roughly 1500–600 BCE, associated with the Aryans.
• Split into the Early Vedic (Rig Vedic, ~1500–1000 BCE) and the Later Vedic (~1000–600 BCE) ages.
THE FOUR VEDAS
• Rigveda — the oldest; a collection of hymns to gods.
• Samaveda — melodies and chants (the roots of Indian classical music).
• Yajurveda — rituals and sacrificial formulae.
• Atharvaveda — spells, charms and everyday/medicinal knowledge.
RELATED TEXTS
• Each Veda has Brahmanas (rituals), Aranyakas (forest texts) and Upanishads (philosophy — also called Vedanta, "end of the Vedas").
• The national motto "Satyameva Jayate" ("Truth alone triumphs") is taken from the Mundaka Upanishad.
EXAM ANGLE: Remember the order and theme of the four Vedas (Rig = hymns, Sama = music, Yajur = rituals, Atharva = spells) and that the Rigveda is the oldest.

• यजुर्वेद — कर्मकांड एवं यज्ञ-सूत्र।
• अथर्ववेद — मंत्र, टोने एवं दैनिक/चिकित्सीय ज्ञान।

• प्रत्येक वेद के ब्राह्मण (कर्मकांड), आरण्यक (वन ग्रंथ) एवं उपनिषद (दर्शन — वेदांत, "वेदों का अंत" भी कहलाते हैं)।
• राष्ट्रीय आदर्श वाक्य "सत्यमेव जयते" मुंडक उपनिषद से लिया गया है।
