Acids, bases and salts are core Chemistry — easy marks if you know the pH scale and litmus behaviour. ACIDS • Taste sour; turn blue litmus red; have pH less than 7. • Examples: hydrochloric acid (HCl), sulphuric acid (H₂SO₄), citric acid (in lemons). BASES (ALKALIS) • Taste bitter, feel soapy; turn red litmus blue; have pH greater than 7. • Examples: sodium hydroxide (NaOH), calcium hydroxide (lime water). THE pH SCALE • Runs from 0 to 14. pH 7 is neutral (pure water); below 7 acidic; above 7 basic. • Indicators show acidity/basicity: litmus, phenolphthalein, methyl orange. SALTS & NEUTRALISATION • Acid + Base → Salt + Water (a neutralisation reaction). • The most common salt is sodium chloride, NaCl (common table salt). EXAM ANGLE: "Acid = sour, pH < 7, blue→red litmus; Base = bitter, pH > 7, red→blue litmus; neutral = 7." Acid + base → salt + water. Test yourself with a daily quiz on Govt Exam Center.
