Interest questions appear in every Quant section and in data interpretation. Learn the formulas and the difference between SI and CI clearly. SIMPLE INTEREST (SI) • SI = (P × R × T) / 100 (P = principal, R = rate % per year, T = time in years) • Amount = P + SI • A sum doubles under SI when R × T = 100 (e.g., 10% for 10 years). COMPOUND INTEREST (CI) • Amount = P × (1 + R/100)^T ; CI = Amount − P • For 2 years: CI − SI = P × (R/100)² • Half-yearly: rate becomes R/2 and time becomes 2T. SOLVED EXAMPLES 1) SI on ₹5,000 at 8% for 2 years = (5000 × 8 × 2)/100 = ₹800. 2) CI on ₹1,000 at 10% for 2 years: Amount = 1000 × (1.1)² = ₹1,210, so CI = ₹210. 3) For ₹2,000 at 10% for 2 years, CI − SI = 2000 × (10/100)² = ₹20. KEY POINT • For 1 year, SI and CI are equal. CI exceeds SI only from the 2nd year (interest on interest). Practise with free mock tests on Govt Exam Center.
