Agriculture questions love the three cropping seasons. Learn which crop belongs to which season and you cover most of them.
KHARIF (monsoon crops)
• Sown with the onset of the monsoon (June-July), harvested September-October.
• Examples: rice (paddy), maize, cotton, bajra, jowar, groundnut, soybean, sugarcane, tur.
RABI (winter crops)
• Sown in winter (October-December), harvested in spring (March-April).
• Examples: wheat, barley, gram (chana), mustard, peas, linseed.
ZAID (summer crops)
• Grown in the short season between Rabi and Kharif (March-June).
• Examples: watermelon, muskmelon, cucumber, and other summer vegetables and fodder.
LEADING PRODUCERS (good to know)
• Rice — West Bengal is a leading producer; Wheat — Uttar Pradesh; Sugarcane — Uttar Pradesh.
• India's main food crops are rice and wheat.
EXAM ANGLE: Remember "Kharif = monsoon (rice), Rabi = winter (wheat), Zaid = summer (melons)." The rice-Kharif and wheat-Rabi pairing is the most-asked point.

कृषि के प्रश्नों में तीन फसल ऋतुएँ बहुत आती हैं। कौन-सी फसल किस ऋतु की है, सीख लें तो अधिकांश कवर हो जाते हैं।
खरीफ (मानसूनी फसलें)
• मानसून आगमन (जून-जुलाई) पर बोई जाती हैं, सितंबर-अक्टूबर में कटाई।
• उदाहरण: धान (चावल), मक्का, कपास, बाजरा, ज्वार, मूँगफली, सोयाबीन, गन्ना, तुअर।
रबी (शीतकालीन फसलें)
• शीत ऋतु (अक्टूबर-दिसंबर) में बोई जाती हैं, वसंत (मार्च-अप्रैल) में कटाई।
• उदाहरण: गेहूँ, जौ, चना, सरसों, मटर, अलसी।
ज़ायद (ग्रीष्मकालीन फसलें)
• रबी एवं खरीफ के बीच छोटी ऋतु (मार्च-जून) में उगाई जाती हैं।
• उदाहरण: तरबूज़, खरबूज़ा, खीरा, एवं अन्य ग्रीष्म सब्ज़ियाँ व चारा।
अग्रणी उत्पादक (जानने योग्य)
• चावल — पश्चिम बंगाल अग्रणी उत्पादक; गेहूँ — उत्तर प्रदेश; गन्ना — उत्तर प्रदेश।
• भारत की मुख्य खाद्य फसलें चावल एवं गेहूँ हैं।
परीक्षा दृष्टि: "खरीफ = मानसून (चावल), रबी = शीत (गेहूँ), ज़ायद = ग्रीष्म (तरबूज़)" याद रखें। चावल-खरीफ एवं गेहूँ-रबी जोड़ी सबसे अधिक पूछी जाती है।
