Economy frightens people only because of the jargon. Strip the jargon away and the ideas are simple. Here are the basics that show up again and again. NATIONAL INCOME • GDP (Gross Domestic Product) — value of all goods & services produced WITHIN the country in a year. • GNP — GDP plus net income earned by Indians abroad. • Real GDP is adjusted for inflation; Nominal GDP is at current prices. INFLATION (rising prices) • Measured by CPI (Consumer Price Index, retail) and WPI (Wholesale Price Index). • Demand-pull inflation — too much money chasing too few goods. • Cost-push inflation — rising input costs (fuel, wages) push prices up. • Deflation = falling prices; the RBI targets moderate inflation (around 4%). KEY RBI RATES • Repo rate — rate at which RBI lends to banks. Raising it makes loans costlier and cools inflation. • Reverse repo — rate at which RBI borrows from banks. • CRR (Cash Reserve Ratio) & SLR (Statutory Liquidity Ratio) — portions banks must keep in reserve. GOVERNMENT FINANCE • Fiscal deficit — when government spending exceeds its income (excluding borrowings). • Revenue deficit — shortfall in the government's regular (revenue) account. • Union Budget is presented on 1 February each year by the Finance Minister. GST & SECTORS • GST (2017) — "one nation, one tax", an indirect tax that replaced many state/central taxes. • Three sectors: Primary (agriculture, mining), Secondary (manufacturing), Tertiary (services). India's economy is now services-led. • Five-Year Plans ran until 2017; NITI Aayog replaced the Planning Commission in 2015. A SIMPLE WAY TO REVISE Link each term to a real headline you have read ("RBI raised the repo rate", "Budget on 1 Feb"). News + notes together stick far better than notes alone. Test these on Govt Exam Center's daily current-affairs quiz.
