In Modern History, examiners love to ask "who did what". The trick is to attach ONE landmark event to each name — that single tag answers most questions. KEY GOVERNORS-GENERAL • Warren Hastings (1773) — the first Governor-General of Bengal; Regulating Act. • Lord Cornwallis — Permanent Settlement of Bengal (1793); father of the Indian Civil Services. • Lord William Bentinck — abolished Sati (1829) with Raja Ram Mohan Roy; first Governor-General of India. • Lord Dalhousie — Doctrine of Lapse; first railway (1853, Bombay–Thane); telegraph & postage. • Lord Canning — the Revolt of 1857; became the last Governor-General and first Viceroy (Govt of India Act 1858). KEY VICEROYS (after 1858 the title became Viceroy) • Lord Lytton — Vernacular Press Act (1878); Royal Titles Act (Queen made Empress of India). • Lord Ripon — local self-government (1882); repealed the Vernacular Press Act; Ilbert Bill. • Lord Curzon — Partition of Bengal (1905), which sparked the Swadeshi movement. • Lord Minto — Morley–Minto Reforms (1909); separate electorates for Muslims. • Lord Hardinge — capital shifted from Calcutta to Delhi (1911). • Lord Mountbatten — the last Viceroy; oversaw Independence & Partition (1947). • C. Rajagopalachari — the first and last Indian Governor-General of free India. QUICK MEMORY HOOKS • "Bentinck = Sati abolished", "Dalhousie = railways", "Curzon = Bengal partition", "Mountbatten = 1947". These four tags alone clear many questions. • Canning is the bridge: last Governor-General AND first Viceroy. Reinforce with a daily History quiz on Govt Exam Center.
