The core English grammar rules tested in government exams. Learn these and most error-spotting and fill-in-the-blank questions become easy. PARTS OF SPEECH (quick recap) • Noun – a name (Ram, city, honesty) • Pronoun – replaces a noun (he, she, it, they) • Verb – an action or state (run, is) • Adjective – describes a noun (tall, blue) • Adverb – describes a verb/adjective (quickly, very) • Preposition – shows relation (in, on, at, to) • Conjunction – joins words/clauses (and, but, because) • Interjection – sudden feeling (Oh!, Wow!) SUBJECT–VERB AGREEMENT • Singular subject → singular verb (He goes); plural subject → plural verb (They go). • "Each, every, one of, neither, either" take a singular verb. • Two subjects joined by "and" → plural; joined by "or/nor" → verb agrees with the nearer subject. ARTICLES (a / an / the) • "a" before a consonant sound (a book); "an" before a vowel sound (an apple, an hour). • "the" for something specific or already mentioned. PREPOSITIONS (common fixed pairs) • good at, interested in, afraid of, fond of, married to, senior to, depend on, listen to TENSES (basics) • Simple present for habits (He plays daily). • Present continuous for actions happening now (He is playing). • Use "since" with a point of time and "for" with a period (since 2010 / for two years).
