BUDDHISM
• Founder: Gautama Buddha (born ~563 BCE at Lumbini; attained enlightenment at Bodh Gaya).
• First sermon at Sarnath; passed away (Mahaparinirvana) at Kushinagar.
• Core: the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path (the "middle path").
• Sacred texts: the Tripitaka (in Pali). Main sects: Hinayana and Mahayana.
JAINISM
• Has 24 Tirthankaras; the first was Rishabhanatha (Adinath) and the 24th was Mahavira (~540 BCE).
• Mahavira's five vows: Ahimsa (non-violence), Satya (truth), Asteya (non-stealing), Brahmacharya (celibacy), Aparigraha (non-possession).
• The "Three Jewels": Right Faith, Right Knowledge, Right Conduct.
• Two sects: Digambara and Svetambara.
COMMON THREADS
• Both reject the supremacy of the Vedas and the caste/ritual system, and stress non-violence (ahimsa).

• दो संप्रदाय: दिगंबर एवं श्वेतांबर।
